Frequently Asked Questions
How long do people usually go to therapy?
Within the therapy field, length of therapy varies depending on the therapist approach and the clients needs.
At Quality Interactions, we take a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused theoretical approach. Within that approach, there is a focus on providing clients with the tools and skills necessary to maintain mental wellbeing on their own/ independent of a therapist.
A typical course of treatment is generally 8-10 sessions.
Why 140 minute sessions?
You may have noticed that many therapists book 50 minute sessions, however, at QI most of our sessions are 140 minutes.
In short, this is because At QI we have found that longer sessions lead to better client outcomes.
At QI we do not view therapy as a “time to vent”, we approach it as a time to develop skills for lifelong mental wellbeing, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop skills that will improve the quality of your life for all your years to come! We have found that in order to do this, this longer block of time frame is crucial.
What does therapy usually cost?
Nationwide, the average cost is $130 per 50 minute session. Counselors are experts in their field, having completed a rigorous masters degree program and acquired clinical experience under more experienced clinicians. This high price reflects the expertise they provide.
At Qi, we seek to increase access to mental care and in alignment with this goal, we provide counseling at a highly discounted rate.

Advantages of self-pay
At QI we do not accept insurance at this time and are all self-pay.
Medical Necessity:
In order for insurance to cover counseling and other mental health care, it must be considered “medically necessary”. Medical necessity is usually determined by the client meeting the official criteria for a mental health condition that is outlined in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) and obtaining a formal diagnosis. Many do not meet the criteria for a mental health condition but would still benefit from therapy; making self pay a necessity. Even when a formal diagnosis is met, therapy often still is not free with insurance: co-pays and deductibles still must be paid.
Official records:
When insurance is being charged, the client’s insurance company must be given details on sessions with clients including: diagnosis, progress notes, goals, and outcomes. Some people do not feel comfortable with this information being in their medical records. This is notoriously true with individuals in the military or other careers where mental health may impact their career progression. Self-pay provides a way to have mental health care without it being on official medical records. How do you think having details of counseling sessions on official medical records could get in the way of making progress in counseling?
Greater access:
Some people are unsatisfied with the therapy options available to them through their health insurance, finding that few providers accept their specific insurance plan, there is a waiting list, they do not qualify for services, or they are not seeing personal progress working with their insurance covered provider.
Session Length:
For most outpatient therapy, insurance limits session length to 50 minutes. At QI, we have found longer sessions (that are not able to be billed to insurance) to lead to better outcomes for clients. See “Why 140 minute sessions” tab for more information.
Looking for a cheaper option?
Try group counseling! Group counseling at Qi is between $10-$25 per session depending on the size of the group.
Many even find group counseling to be just as, if not more, effective at helping them reach their needs as individual counseling.
Group counseling also has the added advantage of meeting multiple people at once that support can be drawn from.
Groups take place both online and in person. I personally prefer in person groups, however, online is available due to the fact that in person is not possible for everyone.
Current group offerings vary depending on current community needs.
